After spending nearly six years in exile following the 1975 tragedy, Sheikh Hasina returned to Bangladesh on May 17, 1981, having been elected president of the Awami League in absentia.
Her return unified the party factions and positioned the Awami League as a central force in the nationwide movement to restore parliamentary democracy throughout the late 1980s.
